Regional Scholars Bowl

The 2A Regional Scholars Bowl tournament was held at Herington Middle School on Thursday, February 2, 2012.  Fifteen teams from around the state traveled to Herington to compete.  The high school teams included:  Alma – Wabaunsee, Burlingame, Mission Valley, Herington, Northern Heights, Howard – West Elk, Lebo, Lyndon, Olpe, Melvern-Marais Des Cygnes Valley, Onaga, Peabody-Burns, Sedan, Solomon, and Washington County.  The competition began at 3:00 with two pools of round robin play.  The Herington team competed in pool A where their record of 4 wins and 3 losses placed them 4th in their pool at the end of 7 rounds.  The top 3 teams advanced to the championship rounds.  At the end of 5 championship rounds, Onaga was the victor with 5 wins.

The Herington High School team consisted of Sarah Bender, Anthony Gutsch, James Mulderrig, Phillip Lavery, Sarah Nistler (captain), and Luke Weber.

Flinthills League Scholars Bowl

Coaches, Mrs. Griffiths and Mrs. Gonzolas, took the Herington High School Scholars Bowl team to Lyndon on Thursday, January 26 for the Flinthills League tournament.  Students participating included:  Tori Addis, Sarah Bender, Anthony Gutsch, James Mulderrig, Sarah Nistler, and Luke Weber.  The team ended the tournament with 4 wins and 3 losses.  This put Herington’s team in a 3-way tie for 2nd place.  However, when the points were tallied, Herington ended up with 4th place.

JV Scholars Bowl Meet at Bennington

Two junior varsity Scholars Bowl teams traveled to Bennington on December 15.  The teams competed in two different pools.  The Herington #1 team comprised of Tori Addis, Matt Roe, Jordan Herpich, Katie Martin, and Charles Kluth competed in the blue pool.  The Herington #2 team comprised of Riley Herrington, Kaitlyn Clark, Sarah Bender, Cuyler Cowart, and Kirsten Smart competed in the red pool.

Coaches, Darlene Griffiths and Janet Gonzolas, took two teams to the El Dorado Scholars Bowl tournament on Dec 1, 2011.

Teams competed in two 9 team pools for round robin play.

Quest:  Super Saturday Qualifying Event
Sat, Dec 3

Anthony Gutsch, Luke Weber, Phillip Lavery, Sarah Nistler, and Sarah Bender traveled to Washburn University on Saturday to compete in the Super Saturday Qualifying Event.  A team of 4 students was asked 60 toss up questions.  If the team answered a toss up question correctly within 3 seconds, they were given 3 bonus questions to answer.  The team scored 410 points, with each correct answer earning 10 points.

Luke Weber lead the team with 15 questions answered correctly.  Then Anthony Gutsch answered 12 correctly.  Phillip Lavery answered 8 correctly.  Sarah Nistler answered 5 correctly, and Sarah Bender answered 1 question correctly.

Scholars Bowl Competes & Wins 1st Place

The HHS Scholars Bowl team traveled to Flinthills High School in Rosalia to compete on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011.  Coaches, Darlene Griffiths and Janet Gonzolas, took two teams to the competition.

Team #1 included Anthony Gutsch, Josh Brunner, Kirsten Smart, Luke Weber, Phillip Lavery, Sarah Bender, and Sarah Nistler.  Below is team #1’s record:
Round 1 – Herington vs Waverly  60 – 10 win
Round 2 – Herington Ghost Round (Bye)  80 points
Round 3 – Herington vs Oxford 30 – 40 loss
Round 4 – Herington vs Southern Coffee County 80-30 win
Round 5 – Herington vs Hamilton 40 – 0 win
This team was the wildcard going into the final rounds.  Oxford and Olpe played each other and Herington played Circle in the first round of finals.
